Where there's payouts of money, there's always the potential for scams.

Special Master Deborah Greenspan, the U.S. District Court official overseeing the Flint water crisis settlement, is warning Flint residents who are awaiting a payment to beware of scams, according to ABC12 in Flint.

Greenspan has received reports of unauthorized attempts to contact claimants in the settlements, claiming that banking information is needed to receive the money, the station reports.

Greenspan said the court has not yet started the process of setting up payment arrangements with most recipients, so any such contact is illegitimate. Class action and individual lawsuits resulted in a $626.25 million settlement.

"The people of Flint have waited too long for justice to let scammers steal what is rightfully theirs," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel posted on X. "Do not respond to unsolicited requests for banking information — official instructions will come directly from the court."
