The Detroit News editorial page is endorsing Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield for mayor. She is running against Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr.

The News writes:

We believe the best person to replace him is Council President Mary Sheffield, who has worked closely with Duggan and supported his initiatives for all three terms.

Duggan has endorsed her, saying, “For 12 years, Mary Sheffield has been a major force in Detroit’s recovery. She used her leadership on the council to make sure every voice was heard and to make sure each program included all Detroiters. She is clearly the most qualified candidate to be the next mayor of Detroit.”

We agree. Sheffield has played a major role in assuring the mayor and City Council governed in a collaborative fashion. Throughout its emergence from bankruptcy, city government has been remarkably free of the divisive bickering that had been so prevalent in the past.

That commitment to cooperation has allowed Detroit to do what's been needed to attract investment and sustain robust growth. It has also assured that neighborhoods have not been forgotten in the process.

Sheffield dominated the primary, winning about 51 percent of the vote compared to Kinloch's 17 percent. Former Council President Saunteel Jenkins got 16 percent.

WXYZ is sponsoring a debate on Oct. 15. at 7 p.m.

The election is Tuesday, Nov. 4.
