Darnell Lamar Robinson, 54, of Detroit, faces criminal charges for allegedly neglecting and abandoning his emaciated pet dog in frigid cold weather.
“The alleged behavior in this case is deplorable. Leaving a dog to starve and freeze in the cold is not only incredibly cruel, it is also a serious crime,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said that on Jan. 30 at 11:20 a.m., Detroit police officers received information about a possibly dead dog at a home in the 19000 block of Eureka Street on Detroit’s east side.
Police arrived and found the emaciated, neglected dog was still alive and in need of urgent medical care, the prosecutor’s office said.
Detroit Animal Care and Control was called, and the dog was transported to APAWS Emergency Veterinary Hospital for treatment of hypothermia, dehydration and severe emaciation.
Robinson has been charged with animals — killing/torturing, second degree, which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years, and animals — abandoning/cruelty to one animal, a misdemeanor.
