Lyft driver Theopris Mays, 40, of Herndon, Va., faces charges of second-degree murder after his car crashed in Detroit’s Corktown area, killing his two passengers — Andre Boynton, 60, and his wife, Carla Boynton, 57, both of Durham, North Carolina.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said that on Feb. 22 at about 10:15 a.m., Detroit police responded to a single-car crash near a warehouse in the 6000 block of Rosa Parks Boulevard and found a vehicle upright and leaning against a loading dock door, with both passengers trapped inside and unresponsive. Medics arrived at the scene and pronounced both victims dead.

Authorities said Mays fled the scene on foot but was arrested a short time later.

He faces two counts of second-degree murder, one count of reckless driving causing death, and one count of leaving the scene of an at-fault accident causing death.

He was arraigned Wednesday in 36th District Court and received a $500,000 cash/surety bond.
